Rollercoaster Mine
In the 1850’s they started mining here, the coal mined was brought up with the hoist. From here, the minecarts rolled into a station where they were tipped over. The freshly mined material would then be transported into the processing plant where it would be washed and crushed into smaller chunks. From this facility, the coal was primarily transported to several blast furnaces.
Around the 1950’s the mine was nationalised but due to declining demand and modern and cheaper options it closed down around 1980.
Since the mine has been abandoned for so long, it has turned into a dangerous place. A lot of the metal grids have rusted through, so stepping on the wrong one could easily result in serious injury or even death. One year before our visit a man fell though a metal grid, falling down more than 10 metres, he was seriously injured and got rushed to a nearby hospital.
