Convento dei Morti

The Convento dei Morti is an abandoned monastery from the 15th century. It was first expanded in the 1620’s and in the 18th century it was rebuilt and expanded again with the addition of a large church with an amazing altarpiece. The courtyard is surrounded by open galleries which are decorated with frescoes from religious caracters and coats of arms of the local noble families.

In the 19th century the monastery was turned into a retirement home which closed down in the 1960’s. The garden of the monastery was transformed into a cemetery for the municipality, which explains the precense of the two old hearses.

In 2009, the municipality funded a renovation project for the old monastery; 150.000 euros were allocated to save the dilapidated monastery and church. Some works were carried out, but it seems like money ran out and the site was again abandoned. The church is still filled with scaffolding and it seems unlikely that the work will ever be resumed.
